Machher Tel Chochchori (Fish Fat Mishmash)

Never thought that our life would suddenly take a halt and abruptly force us to reconsider that life is precious. Just before the Covid19 pandemic started to spread its wings, life was different.

The mundane lifestyle was fast, moving in high speed to achieve the goals. For me the hasty mornings would numb my limbs and end up sinking the dead tired body on bed at night. Always rushing in mending the house, busy behind the kids, picking and dropping them at school, taking them to their activity classes et al. Suddenly we were directed on a long vacation, a vacation that ensured no previous planning, an uncanny fear knocking at the door, no where to go or travel but stay isolated from the world within the four walls of your home. No maids to helps, workload doubled up within 24 hours of notice but I am happy in other way that now all the members of the family are at home and I don’t have to spend tensive hours waiting for them to reach home. Household works have been suddenly increased for sure but when you have supportive family members, workload gets divided. I am happy that I got my kitchen back as the cook is not coming. Though missing the maid who used to wash utensils and swipe & mop the floor. Thankfully the vendors are coming at doorstep and helping us not to go out side to buy the essentials. I have stopped watching news and reading news papers. Just want to stay in an alienated world where hope will hover, happy notes will play and from the bottom of my heart, I will keep on praying for the well being of the whole world. I always try to keep my self busy to avoid all the shattering thoughts. Spending time with the kids, cooking for them, indulging in creative works, yapping with besties to relax the depressive thoughts. And of course reading a lot of books and watching movies whenever I am getting some time of my own.

Cooking typical Bengali food is a rare sight at my kitchen, it is mainly because the lifestyle we used to spend before the lockdown period. It was mostly quick and one pot kind of dishes. Elaborate Bengali dishes happened to serve only on the weekends or if we have a festive season. Right now I have 3 senior citizens at home who delightfully savour typical Bengali meals. So mostly I am bringing my bong soul out to whip up the vibrant dishes that a Bengali cuisine is famous for. These are not exotic but very common in a Bengali kitchen. One such dish I am going to share today, which I loved to eat but never cooked in my life. At my parents’ house Machher tel er Bora (Fish Fat Fritters) were quite common. But I aways kept myself deprived only because the smell of the Machher Tel/Fish Fat used to create a giddiness in me. It happened oneday after my marriage, the cook there in my in-laws’ house served Machher Tel Chachchari ( Fish Fat Mish Mash) on table. The dish looked too much tempting with all the oil oozing out on the plate. But the word Machher Tel(Fish Fat) annoyed me more. On my MIL’s earnest request I tasted little bit and I insantly fallen in love with it. Here today I am presenting you the Machher Tel Chochchori (Fish Fat Mish Mash) recipe.

Instructions
  1. Heat Oil. Add the chopped onion and fry till translucent. If one feels more oil to be added then add just a little oil as when we will add the machcher Tel/ fish fat it will tend to release more oil. Add tomato and cook till it turns soft.
  2. Add the Machcher Tel/Fish Fat and cook on high flame for a minute. Then add the potato and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Add pumpkin. Add all the masalas except coriander leaves and chopped chilies.
  3. When the potato and the pumpkin are semi done add the egg plant. Cook on high flame till everything is well blended and cooked well.
  4. Add the Chopped chilis and Coriander Leaves and give a good stir. Serve hot with rice.
Recipe Notes

The Machher tel (Fish Fat) tends to release too much oil. Therefore try to add as much less oil as one can.

In many families everything is cooked in the Machher Tel without adding any extra oil. The Machher Tel or Fish Fat was added in the beginning. When it starts to release oil the other ingrediants get kept on adding accordingly.
